Before You Say “I Do”
Marriage Certificate Information
Before your ceremony can take place you’ll need to get the paperwork out of the way. You can’t have a ceremony without first obtaining a Marriage License, luckily, that’s easy enough. Marriage licenses are issued by county court judges of the circuit court under his or her hand and seal, that means you’ll need to go to the Courthouse in Downtown Miami at 140 West Flagler Street, Suite 1501 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday and apply.
More important information to know: Both the bride and groom must be present to apply. The Marriage License is valid anywhere in the state, so if you’re visiting from within Florida, you can do this in your hometown. If you’re a U.S. citizen you’ll need a picture ID like a government issued driver’s license or Passport, Social Security number (but not Social Security Cards). If you’re a non-U.S. citizen you must provide one of the following: Alien Registration Card, U.S. State issued Driver’s License or Passport if you do not have a Social Security Number.
The cost of a Marriage License is $93.50, but it can be reduced by $32.50 if you take the four hour licensed Florida pre-marital course. The marriage is not effective until three days after the date the license is issued unless you’ve taken the pre-marital course; then it’s effective upon issue.
Marriage Ceremony Facts
Once the marriage license is obtained you have 60 days to perform the wedding ceremony. A brief civil ceremony can be performed by a Deputy Clerk at the Miami-Dade County Clerk’s office or at one of seven Miami-Dade County district court offices. You may bring family, friends, flowers and a photographer or camera with you to the private room where marriage ceremonies are held. The additional cost for a ceremony held at the courthouses or Marriage License Bureau is only $30.
Not planning on having your marriage ceremony performed at the courthouse? All regularly ordained ministers of the gospel or ordained clergy, judicial officers (including retired), clerks of circuit court judge and notaries public of this state may solemnize the rights of the matrimonial contract. If you have a loved one in mind to perform the ceremony, becoming a notary is easy. The service is available online, you can fill out the paperwork and your official notary documents and package will be mailed to you.
Before you get to all that technical talk, you’ll probably need the very first step in starting your wedding process – the ring. Find a beautiful ring that suits your taste and budget in Miami, whether you’re looking for an engagement ring or wedding bands.
